Geographic Information System (GIS) for tree inventory control

In Hong Kong, there are around 82,000 trees were planted and lots of enquiries form both the public and district councilors on tree information received. Therefore, a centralized Geographical Information System (GIS) to cater for such volume of tree data including e-maps, digital photos and spatial information was developed for the Hong Kong Government and now internet access for the public and the departments are provided. Generally, the multi-user GIS allows access by 300 internal staffs who engages in tree maintenance services and the embedded system can also be implemented on PDAs for users to carry out their daily tree survey tasks. The challenge of this project is the provision of High Availability solution to support the necessary data replication procedures and the growing capacity by adding new servers.
